ideaI purchased hanging folders and designated one folder for every child. i did checklists on fine and gross motor skills and a lot of running records (mostly during free play). I had asked the parents to purchase a large scrapbook for each child's art work and I also document on that as well. I thought that having a scrapbook to give to the parents would make a nice souvenir.
4-24-01I use pocket folders that each child has decorated, that hold three ring binder paper.. Instead of paper I use Photo pocket sheets, and add photos to these through the year. I use the pockets for assessment sheets and some of their best art work. At the end of the year the parents take these home! The folders come in various colors and cost about .40 cents!!
3-12-01I have a folder for each child and label it portfolio. At least once a month we all do a activity together. It can be negative space or matching, cutting or coloring and I add it to each child folder.
12-27-00I keep thorough records on all of my students for their portfolios. I purchased a large plastic portable filing tote that holds a ton of hanging file folders. Then I set up a section for each child. Each child has a folder for work samples (art samples, photos, and sketches) and supporting documentation for each. Also, I keep tabs on what centers each child frequents on a regular basis using an area checklist. In addition, to keep track of their interpersonal growth and development, I regularly create sociograms for each child. And finally, I keep anecdotal records on each child as well. All of these things help me with my twice yearly progress reports as well as parent teacher conferencing.
12-27-00I keep a notebook in my classroom, each child has their own page. Throughout the month I write short observations for each child. At the end of the month I transfer each child's page into their portfolio and start over in the notebook.
10-23-00I take pictures of each of the children in each center, through out the year. I then tape them on a sheet of paper that tell about that center and the importance of it in their child's growth process. I spiral bound the papers and then they have a booklet to keep from preschool.
10-23-00I work in a daycare and I have a class of 16 four year olds. What I did was get a manila file folder and have the children draw a self portrait of themselves. I attached the picture to the front of the folder and had the child write his or her name on the bottom. Inside the folder I keep their evaluation sheets. At least 3-4 times a week I have journal time and the kids come to the table and I give them a topic to write (draw) about. I have them practice writing their names and I go around and write at the bottom of the page what they are making. When they leave my room I will have them do another self portrait and write their name again and I will attach it to the back of the folder. This is amazing to see the difference from September to June.
9-17-00We use poster board folded in half and stapled at the sides to make portfolios for our kids. My program involves a screening before the start of school. While I am talking to parents, my assistant gives the child a large sheet of paper and crayons or markers and asks them to draw themselves. We place this picture on the front of portfolio. At the end of the year we ask them to draw another picture of themselves which is placed on the back of the portfolio. They take these home and it's a nice way to see how much progress they've made in fine motor skills and body awareness.
9-9-00Last year for my pre-k class I set up a portfolio assessment by first having each child decorate their own file folder with their names on it. On the inside cover, I stapled a form to keep track of all of the assessments included. On the form, for each month listed, I made a column for a "teacher selected activity", "child selected", and also a monthly activity (ex. September - "Draw a Man", October - "Block Building " (take pictures of children with their building)... At the end of the month, I checked off each activity and dated it and placed it in the file as soon as it was taken down from display (This may become confusing since not all of the same activities get filed for each child so it would be a great idea to place a special label or sticker on the back of it so that you have easily drop it in a "ready to file pile". I found the portfolio's very handy for Parent Teacher Conferences because you can easily show improvements in writing, cutting... through the various monthly crafts. At the end of the year I sent the portfolio's come by wrapping a colorful ribbon around it. I hope this is helpful to you. I do have to note that the portfolio's were very time consuming so if you choose to do this, make sure you set time out a few days a month for this and Have fun!
8-23-00For our actual portfolio we had a parent bring in large pizza boxes and the children decorated them and then we had a great size to put all the children work.
7-14-00Part of the ongoing assessments I do with the children is visit every week, as a traveling teacher, are language samples. I keep a running log of things the children say. Parents are delighted to see the growth in the language of their child over the course of a year.
7-13-00For the past few years we have been using "journals" to compile the children's work. Fold a large piece of construction paper in half and put blank pages in the middle to form a book. Staple across the top. We place a picture of the child on the front for identification and easy selection. The children can "work" with their journals whenever they choose, or sometimes we draw pictures about a story or activity we just completed. It is a great way to track their progress in a book form. It is easy to share with therapists also when they cannot be in on the activities everyday. When one journal is filled with pictures, start a new one, but keep completed journals to share during conferences or during circle share time.
7-10-00I have a folder for each child. I have three small groups of six so I have six red, six blue and six yellow folders to identify the groups. In each file is 10 sheets titled "Self portrait" and 10 sheets titled "Writing Sample" each sheet has a place for child's name and the date. This method assures one sample each month. I also have a cassette tape for each child. I use these at small group once a month for a recorded language sample. I have yet to use video tapes for each child because of the cost.
5-30-00I always carry a small Post it pad and pen in my pocket. This makes it much simpler for me to write short anecdotal as I watch the children working. Make sure you include the following critical information: Name Date Description (example) Jesse 5/25/00 While playing in the block area with Liam, Jesse stacked 18 legos and counted them correctly. These notes make it easier and faster to prepare for parent teacher conferences!
5-28-00at my preschool we use photos as a way of doing observations we have found this invaluable as four photos in sequence can say more than a thousand words. By the way are parents love to see their child at work also!
5-18-00Each month, beginning w/ the 1st mo., children draw their self-portraits. At the end of the year the pages are bound and the cover is titled "Look How I've Grown!" This is a great way to show parents progress.
4-24-00I save children's work about once a week to put in a notebook that will be sent home at the end of the preschool year. Samples of work include a self-portrait from the first week of preschool, self-portrait from the end of the year, drawings the children have created following field trips, drawings of their friends, stencil art, samples of their writing, etc.. I also take pictures of the children as they work and play. These pictures are used as another tool for assessment. The pictures are labeled and put in their notebooks as well. The children refer to the notebooks often and "read" them (each page is labeled with simple text to introduce sight words such as "This is me and my friend John eating snack.") The children share the notebooks with grown-ups that come in the room. They are real proud of the work they've done and love to show it to others. The parents love this keepsake!
4-20-00Every week we save one drawing from each child. We call it the "Folder Picture" as we have a folder for each child in which the drawing is saved. At the end of the school year, a cover is made and all of the drawings for each child are spiral bound. The drawings are in order so that they start in Sept. and end in June. The parents enjoy this booklet of their child's drawing progress.
4-18-00I will use a small hand held tape recorder and then I record it in the anecdotal record for that child. I will set a day a week for this and do about 4 to 6 children.
Date: 4-10-00On the first day we take a picture, take height and weight, and put it on the folder. We make two observations a week to go into the folder. We try to make our observations based on the individual development plan. We collect art samples and pictures and add them to the file. We tape record the children doing different activities and add these to their folders. We have bi-annual conferences and we place copies of these forms into the folder. Finally we take height, weight and one last picture and put it in the folder.
Date: 4-1-00I teach at a Head Start Center and nutrition, hygiene, good health habits are a part of our program. We weigh and document each child's growth three time during the school year. I included this in the portfolios I made for each parent. Head Start currently does not use the portfolio method of assessment, but I made the portfolios as a way of learning a new method of assessment.
Date: 3-28-00One of the things I include in the child's portfolio is a signature folder. We "sign in" once a week on a pretty slip of colored paper. I date it and paste that strip onto a file folder in order by date. That way it is easy to see the child's printing progress at a glance.
Date: 3-14-00Where I work we use the work sampling portfolio system. It is our first year using it and the parents really seem to enjoy it. Because it is our first year - we are focusing on Language & Math and individual Items . The individual items may be in Art, physical, social- emotional, social studies, science, Language, or math. We take pictures and written observations and samples of children's work. It is a great system and you can find out more about it on the web. I work with preschool age children - the system it set up all the way through grade school .
Date: 3-6-00I use the Mysels Work Sample System to make portfolios for my students. To collect information for the written description of their work I like to use a tape recorder while doing my activities. This way, I don't have to worry about forgetting what was said or done. Also, I don't lose valuable time interacting with the children instead of always writing. As I do the activity with the kids I make sure to say the name of the child and describe what I see them doing. Also, what they say will be recorded as well.
